Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) was established in 1998 as the first medical university of the country after the name of the father of the nation. Since its inception, BSMMU has been serving as the leading medical institution that contributing significantly in growth and improvement of postgraduate medical education in Bangladesh.

Professor Dr. Md. Sharfuddin Ahmed son of Late Alhaj Shamsuddin Ahmed & Alhaj Hosne Ara Begum, Village: Kharhat, Post & Upazilla: Kashiani, District: Gopalgonj and presently residing in Flat-8/A, House 28, Road 14/A, Dhanmondi, Bangladesh. He passed SSC examination Kashiani GC High School, Kashiani in 1972 and HSC from Govt Rajendra College, Faridpur in 1974. He was born in a respected Muslim family on 7th October 1956. He graduated from Sher-e-Bangla Medical College under Dhaka University in 1982 and had residency training in the capacity of Assistant Surgeon. Then he joined Ministry Of Health & Family Welfare (MOHFW) and was posted as Asst. Registrar & Registrar in charge. He was deputed to IPGMR under Dhaka University & Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) for higher education leading to Diploma in Ophthalmology (DO) in 1985 and Master of Surgery (MS) in Ophthalmology in 2004. Subsequently he served in Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Sir Salimullah Medical College & MitfordHospital,IPGMR and BSMMU as Registrar, Resident Surgeon, Asst. Professor, Associate Professor and Professor from 1986. As a professor of ophthalmology he chaired the Department of Ophthalmology of BSMMU. He was appointed as the Pro-Vice Chancellor (Admin) & Chairman of the Department of Community Ophthalmology of BSMMU. He also served BSMMU as Dean, Faculty of Preventive & Social Medicine and Member of the Syndicate & Academic Council. His teaching experience is over 36 years. Currently he has been appointed and nominated for various body and organizations in national and international arena . He is a life member of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) & Ophthalmology Society of Bangladesh (OSB). Now he is an executive committee member of BMA & Bangladesh Medical & Dental Council (BMDC). He served BMA as an elected Secretary General, Treasurer, Organizing Secretary & Office Secretary and elected Secretary General of OSB. He was elected as president of OSB for 3 consecutive terms. He is an elected senate member of Dhaka University. He was Vice-Chair of BMRC, Vice-chair of Country Coordinating Mechanism, Bangladesh (BCCM), President, Bangladesh Oculoplasty Surgeon's Society, President, Bangladesh Academy of Ophthalmology and BCOS. He is the examiner of undergraduate & postgraduate examinations of different universities of Bangladesh. He successfully performed more than 100000 cataract surgery & 50000 other operations as an ophthalmic surgeon. His original articles published in BMDC recognized various National & International Journals (Ophthalmology Related) in last 5 years are about 100 including indexed medical journals. He is an author of "The diseases of eye"&"Eye problems & its solution" published in Bengali language. He received Distinguished Service Award in 2012 from APAO, Korea. He is the recipient of Prevention of Blindness of Bangladesh from APAO, Singapore in 2017. He is an active social worker involved in improving public health consciousness especially about eye health. He is active in mass media including TV talk shows and printed media. He spent his whole life for the sake of democracy and right of the poor people. He was a front line fighter against the autocratic regime during 90s. He organised the movement of " Rights of Vote and Food" in 96. He participated and risked his life during the popular movement during 1/11 to free Awami League president Sheikh Hasina. He has important contribution in dealing national and university programs and strategies to fight Covid-19. His wife Prof Dr. Nafiza Ahmed is a Dermatologist. He is blessed with three sons. His eldest son is an onhthalmologist, 2nd son is also a doctor, 3rd son is a student of Engineering.
